Mayra Ramirez is the first recipient in the U.S. of an organ transplant due to COVID-19. Mayra received a double lung transplant from Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois on June 5th after almost two months in the intensive care unit struggling with the effects of the virus. Before experiencing symptoms, Mayra led a completely normal lifestyle and had been careful to take precautions to protect herself from the virus. Mayra was admitted to the hospital immediately upon arrival at Northwestern’s emergency room and almost did not survive. Doctors considered the transplant a necessary life-saving measure after COVID-19 had caused irreversible, extensive lung damage. Mayra’s transplant was the first of what may be a final option for some future COVID-19 patients.
Join us as Mayra details her extraordinary experience of surviving COVID-19 by way of transplantation.

GTF will be hosting upcoming support groups via ZOOM in order to meet the needs of the transplant community by connecting digitally for support and networking. The only requirement is to be a Georgia resident and be somewhere along the transplant journey (pre- or post-transplant patients, dialysis, caregivers, all organ groups are all welcome). We will follow the lead of the group to discuss relevant topics and will offer helpful guidance as needed.
Groups will be limited to no more than 20 per group. You must have internet accessibility and a device that can work with ZOOM (phone, tablet, iPad, laptop, computer etc).
You must register to attend. Please fill out the form below and directions on joining the zoom support group will follow registration.
Please join us as we Celebrate Life and recognize champions in our transplant community during a charitable evening of dinner, dancing, and unique auctions. Together, we can further the Foundation’s mission to bridge the gap between hope and opportunity by educating and enriching the lives of those affected by transplantation.
At the third annual Celebrate Life gala, presented by Care Dx, Piedmont Transplant Institute, and Emory Transplant Center, we have the privilege of honoring:
- Transplant surgeon, Dr. David Vega, and his personal transplant connection through his niece, Abby Bacho, who saved the lives of five people as an organ donor.
- Bill Backus, heart transplant recipient and two-time GTF Board President.
- Transplant nephrologist, Dr. Eda Hochgelerent, and kidney transplant recipient, Melissa Carter.
Tickets and sponsorships start at $250. All proceeds benefit the Georgia Transplant Foundation. We look forward to seeing you on Mach 13th!
